Chanting

Chanting is another form of meditation. It is meditation with sound. When you chant, just be one with the sound and do not attach to meaning.

After the opening bow, we chant the Gatha of Atonement and then the Prajna Paramita Heart Sutra.

When Sensei gives a Teisho we chant the Gatha on opening the Sutra before the talk.

At close of Zazen we chant either Great Vows for All or Shi Gu Sei Gan Mon.

These are traditional Zen Buddhist verses that point to the heart of the practice. Chant sheets are passed out after opening bows.

“Chanting meditation means keeping a not-moving mind and perceiving the sound of your own voice. Perceiving your voice means perceiving your true nature. Then you and the sound are never separate, which means you and the whole universe become one.”
