Working with Difficulties and Uncertainty

  • Saturday, July 8, 2017 from 7:25am-1:30pm
  • A monk asked Tozan, "Cold and heat come upon us. How can we avoid them?"

Tozan said, "Why don’t you go where there is no cold or heat?"

The monk said, "Where is the place where there is no cold or heat?"

Tozan said, "When cold, let the cold kill you; when it is hot, let the heat kill you."

We will have a little different form for our Zazenkai this month. In addition to our regular schedule of meditation, sitting and walking, dharma talk and daisan (private interviews) we will include several periods of interactive group dialogue on our theme of Working with Difficulties and Uncertainty. We will use several koans as guides to help deepen our insight and understanding of how to work with and utilize difficult situations we find ourselves in when life presents itself to us in ways we had not planned. I hope you will join us in this experiment of awakening together. To register, link to EBZ's Zazenkai tab and follow the prompts.

Performing a service position is a great opportunity to deepen mindfulness practice and to contribute to the functioning of the sangha. We will be scheduling a service position training session this summer for anyone interested in learning a service position for the first time or for those who would like to deepen their understanding of a service position they have had or currently have. Service positions require regular attendance and include set-up, incense bearer, kinhin leader and bell ringer. Contact Michele Daniels at asmgdaniels@optonline.net by Tuesday, July 11, if you are interested. We will then set a mutually agreeable training date.

EBZ recruits volunteers for set-up on a monthly basis, without a long-term commitment, for Tuesdays as well as Thursdays. We need two volunteers for each day. You may volunteer for either day, or both, for the entire month. We use a Google Sheet for the sign-up, a different one from the zazenkai sign-up. Click HERE to access the sign-up Google Sheet link. If you have questions or difficulties with the Sheet, email Ron ronjanman@aol.com or call (973) 997-0101.

  • We suggest that if you have no experience with meditation or practice in the Zen tradition you register for Beginning Instruction. We offer Beginning Instruction on the first Tuesday of each month. For more information, link to EBZ Newcomers tab.

  • Saturday, June 24, 2017 8:0am-9:30am
  • Add an art practice to your Zen program. EBZ offers a Japanese-type calligraphy class to anyone in the local Zen community that is interested. Classes are usually scheduled for the fourth Saturday of the month, church and zendo activities permitting, 8:00-9:30am, at EBZ. Contact Ron Manning ronjanman@aol.com or (973) 997-0101 if you plant to attend. Supplies can be provided for first timer "curiosity seekers". We are in our third year now, and program veterans have made real progress. Suggested contribution is $10.
